Explore the Highlights of Japanese Art exhibition (2nd floor), which traces the history of Japanese art from ancient Jomon times to the Edo period (1603-1868). A must for first-time visitors.
The building is an attraction in itself, and is listed as Important Cultural Property. The Museum Shop is located in the basement level.

The Toyokan is currently undergoing earthquake-proof construction work. It is scheduled to re-open in 2012.
Restaurant L'accord will be open at the temporary store "Food & Cafe L'accord" (In front of the Toyokan) from July 6, 2010 for earthquake-proof construction work at the Toyokan.

The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures ranks together with Nara prefecture's Shosoin Repository as home to one of the oldest and most renowned collections of cultural properties in Japan. The gallery's sleek, contemporary design (by architect Yoshio Taniguchi) adds an extra dimension to the viewing experience.

See the works of Kuroda Seiki, renowned as one of Japan's earliest Western-style painters. Open on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Reference books and other materials are available for research purposes, and photographic images are available for loan. Access via the West gate.

Open in autumn and spring, the museum garden is ideal for indulging in the Japanese tradition of viewing seasonal flowers and foliage. The garden pond is surrounded by five historic tea houses nestled among the trees.
